Choosing a Gazebo - Size

As previously mentioned gazebos come in a multitude of sizes designed for a variety of purposes and needs.

Custom built gazebos of course, can be constructed to any dimensions. Most kit installations require no building permits but if you are considering a large construction it is advisable to check the local building codes.

Common pre-built or gazebo kit sizes range from 8 ft. to 28 ft. dimensions. Shapes vary as well.

Some of the more common specs are:

     4-sided square (10*10 ft.,12*12 ft.)
     4-sided rectangle (10*14 ft.,12*16 ft.)
     8-sided oblong (10*14,12*16)
     8-sided octagon
     10-sided
     12-sided

The size chosen for a Gazebo installation must consider the following factors:

     1)Purpose
     2)Location and available space
     3)Holding Capacity

Purpose

The intended use of a gazebo is a major factor in determining the size of a Gazebo. Garden variety gazebos tend to be small as they are not usually a gathering place for many people, often 8 to 10 ft dimensions.

Yard gazebos for leisure and dining tend to be a bit larger, commonly 12 to 16 ft or more.

Spa enclosures usually are of similar size as the house a spa. A 16 ft Gazebo and 8ft. spa are a suitable combination.

Gazebos used for gathering places are usually 16 ft and up sometimes resembling a small residence. These are often not pre-built kits but frequently custom build gazebos.

Location and available space

The available space largely limits the size selection available. Location and intended use tend to cooperate in determining the size. For example garden locations are usually limited in space but the purpose of shelters in those locations usually suggests smaller gazebos. Yards provide larger spaces and likewise are needing somewhat larger gazebos for dining and leisure.

Large pavilion style gazebos are often needed in fields or parks offering a lot of available space.

Spa gazebos can sometimes present some difficulty as spas are often situated in confined areas such as on a backyard deck, but need more space for total enclosure.

Spa gazebos commonly come in smaller sizes such as 8 ft. or 10 ft but are usually just roofing shelters in those dimesions. Walled structures to enclose a spa require larger dimensions. These installations need to be carefully planned to prevent access obstruction and interference with surrounding areas.

Holding Capacity

The number of people and the items contained in a gazebo will dictate the minimum sizes suitable. For gazebos intended to contain a table and chairs it is recommended that 8 ft is suitable for 2 people and an additional 2 ft. is needed for the addition of every two persons.

Four people can comfortably utilize a 10 ft gazebo and 12 ft is recommended for 6 people.
